Baby wearing has been around for centuries, and of course there are numerous baby carries available on the market today, CQ Premmies is delighted to have Hug a Bub on board as a supporter.

Hug a Bub specialize in wraps and slings to wear your baby in, and more importantly smaller babies (as in our little prems) can be worn in these wraps!!

Why?

For me personally we started baby wearing after my 3rd baby was born, i needed to hold him for long periods during the day to settle him (reflux!) and still be able to run around after my 3 and 1 yr old, not to mention general household chores had to be done too!

So we set out on a mission, to find a way to hold him and still be hands free. We tried a sling, and he hated it, we thought he was bad before, well he was even worse in it!, so i managed to get my hands on a good old baby borjn – it was ok, hes was still a little on the small side so he would flop around a bit, but other than that he was happy – I wasn’t! It caused me some shocking back pain, so once again a went googling and questioning, i then found Hug a Bub, and to this day we still use it (new kid in the wrap now days, but still heavily used!), the babies loved it and mummy loved it – what more could we ask for!

so back to why, Hug a Bubs website has a really good list of the benefits of baby wearing, things such as helping with breastmilk supply, bonding, helps with reflux are just a few. Why a Hug a Bub – well Hug a Bub provides head support for your baby, offers great back support for yourself, allows you to breast feed discreetly, you can wear baby in many different positions (ideal as baby grows!) these are just a few of the benefits of wearing your baby in a Hug a Bub wrap!

Baby wearing has been given the big thumbs up by me and my family, and I love being able to have that extra closeness to my little ones no matter where we are! (not to mention protect them from dozens of germy little hands at places like playgroup!! )

We were doing really well until the 23 week stage when I was flown to Rockhampton by RFDS in pre term labour. I was in hospital for a week on many drugs to stop the labour. At 29 weeks it all happened again and the doctor would not let me leave Rockhampton. This was a very emotional time. We were really lucky we had good friends that did not mind me staying from this time on. My husband would come in every weekend to play AFL and see me. Our family are from South Australia so they took turns in coming to visit.

At 34 weeks we had an ultrasound and Samuel was not growing so the decision was made to induce them immediately. I had planned on having a cesarean. However, the doctor had said it was my decision but Samuel would benefit from a natural birth. I did what I thought was best and went natural. 6 hours in total (not bad I thought!) Samuel James was born at 12.50pm and Amelia Kate born at 1pm. Both whisked away to the SCN. Samuel weighed 1740gm and Amelia 2160gm.

After spending 3 weeks in the SCN we were able to take them home. This was a very exciting day. They were still tiny (2 weeks before their due date). The next 6 months were a blur! They are now walking and getting into a lot of trouble.

Ok so this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for those of us that do chose to use cloth nappies on our wee ones read on:

The first major issue that comes to mind when i think cloth nappies and a prem baby is – leg gaping, yep that lovely gap that’s left cause your little ones legs just don’t quite have the bulk on them that a full term baby does. The second thing – bubs is still too tiny to even fit a newborn disposable properly, how on earth are they going to fit a newborn cloth nappy??

Well im pleased to announce that Bec over at Brisbane Premmies has complied a wonderful list of nappies that fit prem babies. So yes there are MCN out there that do actually fit our skinny thighed babes!

Head on over to Bec’s “Premmies in cloth” entry to see whats available!

And if you happen to come across a nappy that fits your little one and isn’t on the list then be sure to let Bec know so she can update her list!
