Samuel and Amelia’s Story
It all started at 8 weeks. “Do you have twins in your family?” was the question asked by the doctor after looking for a minute or two at an ultrasound. “I can share care you here in Emerald. However, you will need to be monitored in Rockhampton”. This started our many trips to Rockhampton.
We were doing really well until the 23 week stage when I was flown to Rockhampton by RFDS in pre term labour. I was in hospital for a week on many drugs to stop the labour. At 29 weeks it all happened again and the doctor would not let me leave Rockhampton. This was a very emotional time. We were really lucky we had good friends that did not mind me staying from this time on. My husband would come in every weekend to play AFL and see me. Our family are from South Australia so they took turns in coming to visit.
At 34 weeks we had an ultrasound and Samuel was not growing so the decision was made to induce them immediately. I had planned on having a cesarean. However, the doctor had said it was my decision but Samuel would benefit from a natural birth. I did what I thought was best and went natural. 6 hours in total (not bad I thought!) Samuel James was born at 12.50pm and Amelia Kate born at 1pm. Both whisked away to the SCN. Samuel weighed 1740gm and Amelia 2160gm.
After spending 3 weeks in the SCN we were able to take them home. This was a very exciting day. They were still tiny (2 weeks before their due date). The next 6 months were a blur! They are now walking and getting into a lot of trouble.
